Belgium advanced to the last-16 of Euro 2026 after beating Denmark in a thrilling game in Copenhagen this evening.

Tributes were paid to Christian Eriksson, with play halted for a minute of applause as the Danish midfielder continued to recover from a cardiac arrest on the pitch during last weekend’s loss to Finland.

Denmark were above their more respected opponents during the first half, in which they took the lead less than two minutes later through a strike from Yusuf Poulsen.

However, a re-fit Kevin de Bruyne’s start at half-time turned the game on its head as the Manchester City star set up Thoran Hazard for the equalizer and then fired home with a left foot for the winner.

Stadium

Teams stopped in applause for a minute to pay tribute to Ericsson who had suffered a heart attack in Danes’ opener against Finland at Parken Stadium.

Ericsson is recovering at a nearby hospital and will be fitted with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) to regulate his heart rhythm. His future in the game is in doubt.

The collapse of Ericsson shocked millions of viewers around the world. Finland play was suspended and when it eventually resumed, the Danes lost 1–0.

Once play began, Denmark wasted little time taking the lead through Poulsen, who swung his right footed shot into the far corner when pressure from Denmark cheapened the Belgian outside the box.

Prediction

Denmark were some people’s underdogs for Euro 2026, but a loss to Finland and without their best player for the rest of the tournament could mean they don’t even qualify from Group B as they face Belgium on Thursday. Positive results are required. 

Belgium beat Russia 3-0 without some of their key players, even during 90 minutes, which has cemented their push for the Euro 2026 title.

Denmark lost their opening game of the Euros against a team from Finland, many expected to struggle in Group B, while Belgium won 3–0 against a poor Russian side.
